Gulf of Mexico: After oil spill now Hurricane „Alex“! – The holiday region around the Gulf of Mexico seems to be unlucky these days, since after the BP oil spill many travelers are worried again by the appearance of the first hurricane of the season.

Hurricane Alex, which had enlarged overnight from a tropical storm to hurricane stage, is on its way to the coast near the border between Mexico and Texas, and will hopefully pass most of the oil and gas installations in the U.S. waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

In his moving slowly towards the northwest, the hurricane reached a speed of 80 miles per hour, which makes „Alex“ to a Category One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Hurricane warnings now apply to regions from Baffin Bay (Texas) to La Cruz, Mexico.

A landfall is expected late on Wednesday evening or for early Thursday – while until then, hurricane „Alex“ could intensify into a hurricane of Category Two (mph 96-110 miles) before reaching the mainland.
