As the responsible oil company BP shows on its website, the 100-ton cylinder was placed on the hole in about 1500 m depth, which according to the head of the operation, Thad Allen, was a „vitally important step forward“.

BP manager Doug Suttles also expressed his confidence in „Top Hat 10“ with the following statement: „We continue to make good progress – but it can probably take another two days until it is proven whether the operation actually was a success.“

If this would be the case, a complete sealing of the active oil leek through the cap is in reach, which would keep most of the oil flow down. But because of additional, necessary relief wells, a final solution of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico probably has to wait for another few weeks.
