Russia wildfire: Situation remains critical, cultural heritage endangered! – Been plagued by forest fires since more than a week already, according to Russian leader of the national crisis center, Vladimir Stepanov, another 300 wildfires were registered in the past 24 hours.

Russia’s worst wildfires for decades have been the result of the hottest summer during the past 130 years. Thousands of soldiers supported local efforts and tried to put out the fires – but so far, with little success.

The situation remains critical especially in the region of Nizhny Novgorod, about 400 kilometers east of Moscow, home of the Sarov nuclear-research center. After the number of helpers in the fight against the fire has now increased to 2,000, the situation could relax a bit now, according to the latest news.

On todays Wednesday, first reports about the destruction of cultural sites were published, in detail a Russian Orthodox church made of wood in the village Yevlashevo (Penza region), which was hit by the fires.
