Russia’s worst wildfires for decades have been the result of the hottest summer during the past 130 years. Thousands of soldiers supported local efforts and tried to put out the fires – but so far, with little success.

The situation remains critical especially in the region of Nizhny Novgorod, about 400 kilometers east of Moscow, home of the Sarov nuclear-research center. After the number of helpers in the fight against the fire has now increased to 2,000, the situation could relax a bit now, according to the latest news.

On todays Wednesday, first reports about the destruction of cultural sites were published, in detail a Russian Orthodox church made of wood in the village Yevlashevo (Penza region), which was hit by the fires.
